Owl Ears – can you find the mouse in the dark?

Owls hunt at night, when eyesight is not enough. Instead they rely above all on hearing to find small rodents – often from a perch, where they sit completely still and listen. The faintest rustle in the grass can give a mouse away.

The barn owl is a master listener. One of its ear openings sits higher than the other, so a sound reaches the two ears slightly differently. That lets the owl hear whether a sound comes from the right or the left – and whether it comes from above or below. Its round facial disc works like a dish that gathers the sound. That is how a barn owl can catch a mouse in total darkness.

Two owls live at Eagleworld: the spectacled owl and the Philippine scops owl. Both are nocturnal hunters with silent flight. Now you can try hunting with your ears.

How to play

  • Put on headphones for real 3D sound. Press Test left/right to check they are the right way round.
  • Press Step into the dark. Somewhere around you, a mouse is rustling.
  • Turn your head: drag with your finger, move the mouse or tilt your phone. The sound is loudest and centred in your head when you point straight at the mouse.
  • Tap or click to strike. You score for accuracy and time. There are 5 rounds.
  • Afterwards, try human ears and notice how much harder it is without the owl's tricks.

Tip: Use headphones and turn the volume down before you start. No headphones? Choose Speaker – the sound then gets clearer the better you aim.

The sound is made in your browser. Nothing is recorded or stored.
